Why Use Credit Cards on Alibaba
0:01 Hey everyone, Alex Connolly coming to you guys today with another video. Today's video, I want to talk about why you don't want to use alternative payment methods on Alibaba. Why you want to stick with a credit card. The reason being is if you don't use a credit card, if you use one of the others like wire transfer, you can be subject to fraud. And in the case of those other payment methods, Alibaba tends to side with the manufacturer and they tend not to give you your money back.
0:27 I didn't get my money back from that, which was really frustrating. And I want to explain what happened. Anyway, I purchased my items on Alibaba. I spent $500 for 100 units of the item, around $30 for shipping. And I waited several weeks. After a few weeks, my items arrived, and all 100 units were in very poor condition, not as advertised. They were broken and not in condition to sell to customers. Customers left very unhappy with the state of this product that I received.
0:53 Of course, I immediately started a return request on Alibaba, explained that the items were broken and unacceptable for customers. Alibaba started a dispute resolution process and instructed me to mail the product back to the supplier. So I spent the $30 on shipping and sent it back to China. Of course, I didn't get the tracked option, which is like $140, and this turns out to be a grave mistake. Inevitably, the supplier says they never received the items back. They were being very disrespectful the whole time, wouldn't acknowledge the mistake, and accused me of making things up.
1:31 Because I used wire transfer to save on credit card fees, there's no way for me to get my money back. It was really stressful, really frustrating. It dragged out for several months, and I still lost my money. So I want to caution you about not using a credit card to pay for your Alibaba order. The reason being is with the credit card company, they can do chargebacks, they can do arbitration, they can fight on your behalf.
Protecting Your Business and Customers
1:54 But when you use one of these other payment methods to save a little bit of money, you're actually lowering your level of protection. For new sellers, I think it's very, very risky. Fortunately, I have enough revenue coming in that this didn't kill my business, but it was really frustrating and set me back a little bit. Not only did it set me back in terms of the cost of the inventory, but also time. I had to find another supplier, reorder, and cross my fingers and hope I didn't run out of inventory before the new inventory came in.
2:25 So think about that too. You're not only protecting the money you're sending over, but you're protecting your clients from having that loss, having that experience where they're hoping to purchase an item and it's getting low on stock. But oh wait, the supplier messed up, and now I, the e-commerce seller, cannot provide a quality product to the buyer. So think about your customers, don't just think about yourself and your wallet.
Sample Orders and Seller Misrepresentation
2:49 Be careful when you're shopping on Alibaba. If you can, try to get a sample. A lot of sellers will work out a sample deal where they send you a sample product. You may have to pay a little more for shipping, but try to make sure that they are really selling what they say they are. I had an issue on eBay recently where I purchased a couple of lapel pins, artwork for resale, and when they arrived, they did not match the description.
3:14 Both sellers tried to say, 'Oh, we'll return it for a refund.' Of course, shipping to China on very cheap items is not reasonable. Of course, when eBay sees that the manufacturer in China has misrepresented the item, you prove this by uploading pictures and comparing them to the listing, and eBay will refund you without having to return them. Of course, it's the seller's responsibility to represent the items that they're selling accurately so that the buyer knows what they're buying prior to purchase. It's extremely dishonest and makes eBay look shady when manufacturers misrepresent items.
Payment Method Benefits and Alibaba Supplier Caution
3:52 The last thing eBay wants to do is for you to feel ripped off and robbed and to never shop on the platform again. So understand that using the proper payment method can have sort of exponentially bad or positive effects based on the type of payment it is. Making sure that you're not the only one that has to go up to bat in case of a dispute, making sure that you have these major credit card companies that have whole teams of people to deal with these issues.
4:24 If you're not known for chargebacks, they're going to want to work with you. They want to retain you as a customer because they know in the long run, the lifetime value you as a customer, as far as paying credit card fees, is much higher than the cost to them to help you deal with fraud prevention. It really helps them add transparency and legitimacy to what is an industry that a lot of people are suspicious and skeptical about.
4:45 That's banking, maybe one of the few industries out there that has a harder time getting customer trust than we do. But anyway, I want to thank you for watching this video. This video, I just wanted to talk about why you need to be careful about what payment you use with Alibaba. Not all Alibaba suppliers are created equally. Not all of them are the same. They're located in different cities, maybe in the same general area or country, but they're not all the same. And I just want to really drive that point home.
5:14 So thank you for watching. So nice.
