Intro and Overall Happiness
0:01 Hey YouTube, Alex here. I want to answer the question: Am I happy with my decision to spend one year in Thailand? There won't be any points to this one. I think it's just going to be kind of a free flow. With that said, I am very happy with the decision to spend time here. I really enjoyed it, the variety of landscapes, the variety of people, the tropical weather.
0:22 It's Songkran today, and I've definitely been getting sprayed a lot with water. Songkran is, to me, a holiday where it's a celebration of life. I know there's the official meaning, which is related to Buddhism and cleansing, but it's just such a light-hearted holiday, and I really enjoy it. Songkran has this effect where you are reminded that you are in Thailand. There are plenty of life-affirming experiences here in Thailand.
0:49 For me, it's been really unique in that regard, not just the obvious in terms of having great dating experiences, but also the new friends that I've met along the way and the longtime ones that I've reconnected with. I feel much less stressed out than I did when I got here almost a year ago. Thai people have a 'live and let live' attitude, and it's really calming to be around, especially coming from the fast-paced United States.
Live and Let Live Attitude
1:17 The weather beats a North American winter every time. It's just so sunny and mild. I'm really enjoying it. Thailand is easily one of my favorite countries. I recommend it for somebody who wants to go to Southeast Asia and they're unsure of where to go. It's just so easy; you have an easily followed tourist trail. It's fairly economical for people coming with Western currencies. The people are hospitable, warm, and fun to be around.
Why Thailand is a Great Choice
1:45 I find that it's quite different from the US in a lot of ways. A lot of the things that I really enjoy, I can access here as far as comfortable accommodations, great food, nice weather, beaches, mountains – all these things that I like can be found here in Thailand too.
Language and Ease of Travel
2:04 To me, it's also a great base for the region. It's a great place that if you want to see a lot of countries in the region, you're not sure about things like the language barrier. Well, throughout touristic Thailand, people have English. Now, one of my Thai friends mentioned to me recently, she thinks that in 5 to 10 years, there will be even more English in Thailand as Thai people learn more and more English and become more and more exposed to the Western world. Then we think that the English levels will continue to increase here.
Ease of Doing Business and Variety
2:34 In spite of the language barrier, I found it to be easy to get around Thailand and do business as a foreigner. When it comes to finding apartments, I've had no issue. When it comes to finding interesting attractions, there's some in every town. As far as shopping malls, almost every place I've been in Thailand has a shopping mall.
2:51 Koh Phangan is the first one that I think there's just one mall, and it's not a large series mall, but it's still quite a wonderful place to be. Thailand has a lot to offer as far as variety goes. I'm still surprised at how much I've gotten to see in one country, and I'm glad I took the time to see a lot of it because there's so much to see here.
Exploring Thailand's Offerings
3:13 I know that for a lot of people, they're first exposed to Chiang Mai or to Bangkok, and for a while, that was the extent of my experience. But I feel really grateful to be here and be able to see and do a lot of things that I never had time to do before. I am going to miss it a lot.
3:31 I've still got a couple of months left, that will give me additional chances to check out some new spots in Thailand. There's just so much to like about it, and there's so much more still for me to see, and I'm really looking forward to that.
3:41 Would I do anything differently as far as my time here in Thailand goes? No, I don't think so. There's not anything I would do differently. I've had a great time here, I've learned so much, I've met so many interesting people, I've gotten a lot of opportunities to see a lot of different things that I would never see back in the US.
Reflections on Time in Thailand
Moving On to New Adventures
4:02 The main reason I'm going is that my visa expires this summer, and I'd like to go try something new out. I've never been to Vietnam before. Indonesia is also appealing, but it's looking more like Vietnam than Indonesia next, and I'm excited to see it, see what it's about, have some fun.
4:15 One video idea that came to mind is how to stay cool in Thailand. I think that that's something that is important for people who have never been to Thailand before to get a better sense of the need to drink water.
Staying Cool in Thailand
4:29 What am I going to miss most about Thailand? I think it's going to be, of course, the people. The people here are fantastic. I really enjoy the people that I've met here. They just have an interesting culture that's different from what I'm accustomed to in the US, and it's great for relieving stress and calming down from a stressful period of your life.
What Will Be Missed Most
4:50 I think a lot of people would really enjoy being able to do something here. I think that that's what's great about Thailand is that there's something for everyone. You can be a person who just likes architecture and come here and have a blast. You could be a person that just wants to learn about Buddhism, and you could come here and do that too.
Tips for Visitors
5:05 A few tips: learning a few basic words – this is probably true for every country – can really help you to connect with Thai people. Just saying thank you and yes or no, these are very helpful phrases to have, and they can be helpful for you in your journey. Someone who's into nature could also come here and be very happy with the nature.
5:24 As far as safety goes, it does feel quite a bit safer than where I lived before in California, and yeah, I feel safe here. The only two places I have left to see are the islands and Chiang Mai, as far as places that are must-sees for me. I also want to see Hua Hin, so those three, and I'm going to try to knock out at least one of those in the next couple of months, most likely Hua Hin, which I'll be sure to make content from there as well.
Final Thoughts and Outro
